Lately I’ve seen an abuse and misuse of specific words when bloggers and commentators have been posting. That’s not to say that you can’t use them just that I believe their being used out of context.
A few good examples
Imperialist – The word imperialism is used a lot by people in the socialist and revolutionary movements to define what they hate about the United States. Look up the definition yourself, but basically it comes down to a group or government trying to influence other group or governments. This is a common idea that’s been used by many countries over the last few years. Russia, Cuba, Britain, France, Japan, Germany, and Iran are just some of the countries I can name off the top off my head. Even groups can be imperialistic how about Microsoft, and IBM.
So my point is identifying the US as an imperialistic nation is stating the obvious, all people, governments and groups are imperialist by nature.
Using the Wikipedia definition, then Iran is imperialistic and so are the socialist movements around the world. Seems they want to control their sphere of influence to their advantage. Talk about a word that has been abused.
Disproportionate response
These days used to condemn Israel in its fight with Hizbollah. Wherein it states that a country that has its soldiers kidnapped and rockets fired at it for the last few years is not allowed retaliating because they may kill more people than have died in said attacked country. What a crock. Better bloggers than I have commented on these words and I direct you to them CoxandForkum, Thrutch, Betsy's page. Now I know some of you are thinking “but but its true Israel did kill at a ratio of 10 to 1”. My response tough shit get over it war is hell.
Agenda “a series of steps to be carried out or goals to be accomplished”
Also used with the terms personal agenda and secret agenda. People use this word as a bad thing as in “Stephen Harper has an agenda” Oh no look out the sky is falling of course he has a agenda people, it would be kind of stupid to be in office and not have a plan for the running the country. If he didn’t have an agenda liberals would complain that the PM had no vision and should have an agenda. It would be like he was in office and just dithering around doing nothing.
So my point, the PM agenda doesn’t match the liberal party agenda. Thank God
Zionism my personal favorite misused word Zionism. From looking at the definitions it all boils down to a political idea which states that the Jewish people are entitled to a homeland. I don’t see why this word is used in a derogatory sense, stating that someone is a Zionist means that they support a Jewish homeland. Oh no, I think I’ve been insulted. Let’s do a poll
Do you think Israel should be a country? Yes or no.
If you say yes you’re a Zionist
If you say no then your stating the UN was wrong in 1948.
Now when you say no I’d like a reason if you don’t mind.
